Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions? I’ve popped the most common ones below to help guide you through the booking journey
-
How far in advance should I book? The sooner the better! It is recommended that you book your wedding makeup artist at least 6-12 months in advance. This will give you enough time to research and book a reputable artist who fits your style and budget.
-
Do you require a deposit to book?Yes — a $100 non-refundable deposit is required to secure your date. Your booking isn’t locked in until this is received. This policy ensures that I can allocate the necessary time and resources to prepare for your special day.
-
How do I book my bridal services with MJ Makeup and Beauty? To book, you'll need to complete a signed contract and pay the $100 deposit. Bookings are secured on a first come, first served basis — your date isn’t locked in until both the deposit and contract are received. This deposit comes off your total, with the remaining balance due prior to the wedding day or in cash on the day. Once your trial is complete, I’ll send a confirmation outlining all the final details.
-
Do I need to have a trial in order to book you for my wedding makeup?A trial isn’t required to secure your date — but it’s one of the best things you can do to feel calm and confident leading into your big day. It’s a chance for us to connect, explore your style, and tailor a look that truly reflects you. Most brides leave their trial feeling not only beautiful, but excited and reassured about how things will run on the day. You can also time your trial for a hens night, dress fitting, or special event to make the most of it!
-
When should I book my bridal trial? It is entirely up to you! Most brides book their trial 4–12 weeks out from the wedding. That said, some like to pair it with their hens night or another event to make the most of their glam!
-
What should I expect during a bridal makeup trial?Your trial is such a special part of the bridal journey — it's where we get to meet, chat, and create your dream look together. You’ll be welcomed into my studio with a tea, coffee or even a glass of bubbles, and we’ll start with a relaxed consultation. We’ll chat about your wedding dress, the theme, your personal style, your inspo pics and the overall vibe you’re envisioning for the day. From there, I’ll create a full bridal look, adjusting things as we go until you feel 100% happy. You're more than welcome to bring along a guest if you'd like a second opinion or just want to share the moment with someone special! ✨ Tip: Wearing a top in a similar colour to your dress is super helpful — it gives us the best feel for how your makeup will photograph against your gown.
-
Where are you located? All bridal trials are held at my Rangiora home studio — a warm, welcoming space with everything we need to create your perfect look. It’s relaxed, private, and set up for the full bridal experience (plus tea, coffee, or a cheeky glass of bubbles if you’d like!). If you’re booking for the big day, I offer on-location makeup across Christchurch and beyond.
-
Do you travel?Yes, absolutely — I love to travel, and I’m more than happy to come to you on your special day, whether you’re local or planning something a little further afield. Most Christchurch areas fall within my minimum travel fee of $50, which covers travel time, setup, and pack-down. For destination weddings (like Lake Tekapo, Queenstown, or anywhere within driving distance), I’m super flexible. I often stay at local campgrounds and make use our rooftop tent, which helps keep things affordable for brides who need me to travel — and honestly, I love the adventure! If your wedding is outside the South Island or beyond driving range, I’m still open to it — we’ll just chat and make a plan together. Let me know your location and I’ll work out the best option for you
-
Can you stay for touch-ups?Yes — if you’d like me to return or stay for pre-photo or reception touch-ups, I’m happy to offer this as an add-on. Let’s chat!
-
Can my mum or friends book in too?Of course! I offer makeup for mums, aunties, guests, and even flower girl glam. Just let me know who’s joining in when you enquire.
